Buying carbon offsets and renewable energy credits (RECs) are two ways to lower the effective carbon emissions of a business or organization, but now, thanks to TerraPass, individuals can also purchase renewable energy credits for their households as well.
According to the US Dept of Energy, the average American household consumes almost 11,000 kWh (11 MWh) of electricity annually, which has carbon emissions equivalent to the amount of carbon sequestered by over 6 acres of US forest over the course of a year.
The obvious step would be to stop using so much electricity, through energy-efficient appliances, smart home energy management systems, energy-wise landscaping, and straight-up conservation efforts, but it’s possible to go even further by purchasing individual and household renewable energy credits.
The purchase of renewable energy credits through a company like TerraPass supports clean energy generation, and effectively supplies a home with wind power, solar power, biomass, geothermal, or hydropower, even if it’s not generated onsite. The new program from TerraPass allows customers to purchase a one-time REC, or to subscribe to a monthly purchase program, which is priced at $5/MWh.
“With climate change gaining more national attention, individuals want to do their part to support cleaner and sustainable energy. We want to ensure that we can service the needs of not only our business customer, but the individual household as well, and we feel we have done that by creating flexibility that you won’t find anywhere else with a REC product.” – Gerardo Manalac, Senior Vice President, Green Marketing
Customers can choose the quantity of RECs from TerraPass based on their own electricity usage, and either offset the entire amount every month, or part of it, and essentially support clean energy and reduced carbon emissions for their power needs.
