Opus Energy

Ceased trading

What happened
2025-05-01 (final supply contracts transferred to PE; the majority of SME customers had moved to EDF in September 2024)
Customers moved to
Most small-business customers went to EDF in September 2024. The remaining Opus contracts went to PE (Pozitive Energy) on 1 May 2025, with Ofgem approval. Power purchase agreements with renewable generators, and certain other customers, had already moved to Drax Energy Solutions.

Opus Energy was a Northampton-based business-only gas and electricity supplier, founded in 2002 and bought by Drax in 2017. It sold most of its small-business customers to EDF in September 2024 and passed the rest to PE (Pozitive Energy) in May 2025. It is now closed as a supplier, although the legal company remains active within the Drax group. In November 2024 Ofgem announced that Opus would pay more than £7 million in refunds, goodwill and redress after self-reporting that 87,825 non-domestic customers had been overcharged between 2003 and 2023.

Customers and switching

Opus Energy no longer supplies energy and is not responding to enquiries. Former customers are now with EDF or PE. EDF customers: EDF honoured fixed Opus tariffs for the rest of the contract. Variable customers moved to EDF 'Freedom for business', out-of-contract customers to 'Extended supply' and deemed customers to EDF deemed rates. Fixed contracts cannot be ended early. REGO backing on fixed renewable tariffs carried over. Queries go to hellobusiness@edfenergy.com. PE customers: fixed contracts continue on the same terms. An early termination fee may apply to leaving early under the original Opus terms. Deemed, variable and out-of-contract customers moved onto PE rates. They can switch with no notice once any outstanding balance is settled. Home moves go to cot@pe.solutions. Unresolved Opus disputes can still be taken to the Energy Ombudsman after 8 weeks or a deadlock letter (0330 440 1624).
