Highly Fuel-Efficient Vehicles

When the time comes to replace your car, consider a fuel-efficient option such as a hybrid, a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle or an alternative fuel vehicle.

  • A hybrid car combines the benefits of a petrol engine with an electric motor. The technology in these cars includes automatic start and stopping to reduce wasted fuel from idling. An electric motor drive helps with delivering more power from the petrol engine at fast speeds or on inclines. The vehicle uses just the electric motor at low speeds, which is where petrol engines are generally inefficient. Regenerative braking systems capture energy from the forward motion of the vehicle and use it to rotate the wheels backwards to conserve fuel while stopping.
  • A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle can be refuelled with petrol and electricity at charging stations. The extended range electric vehicles, or EREVs, rely on an electric motor to turn the wheels. Petrol is only used to generate electricity, and the petrol engine is not connected to the wheels.
  • With a parallel or blended hybrid plug-in vehicle, both the petrol engine and the electric motor are connected to the wheels. The electrical engine powers the car at slow speeds and the petrol engine kicks in at higher speeds. With a hybrid, the main source of fuel is still petrol, while with a plug-in hybrid, electricity is the main way of moving the vehicle. The plug-ins will drive until the state-of-charge of the battery runs out.
  • Alternative fuel cars may be another option for conserving energy. A diesel car is not technically an alternative vehicle, but it operates on biodiesel or a blend of diesel and biodiesel fuel. A flexible-fuel vehicle offers the ability to power the vehicle on ethanol blends up to E85 or on petrol.

In general, hybrid vehicles are a good choice for city drivers because the slower city speeds allow for the greater use of the more efficient electrical engine. Hybrids are also quiet and have plug-in batteries that can store a significant amount of energy. They do cost much more than a diesel fuelled car, which offers a higher level of efficiency at highway speeds. Diesel engines are also optimal for driving long distances.
