LG Chem has been selected to provide grid storage batteries for a solar installation that will power the village of Minster, Ohio. The solar farm will produce 7 megawatts of power. The LG Chem battery system will store up to 3 megawatts, making it one of the largest grid storage facilities in the US.

“This project is a key example of how energy storage can generate tangible revenue streams while providing critical grid services,” said Mike Edmonds, president of the U.S. business unit of S&C Electric Company. “S&C has been able to deliver a comprehensive energy storage solution through its collaboration with LG Chem and is very proud to be moving the energy storage industry forward.”

“LG Chem is continuing to provide world-class solutions for key customers and projects worldwide,” said Sunghoon Jang, senior vice president, Energy Solution, LG Chem. “Collaboration on this project with S&C has provided not only key learnings, but also a system that provides the community with critical grid services, as well as commercially viable revenue streams for the system owner and local utility. This project shows how the energy storage industry has entered another phase with viable projects for customers and end users.”

S&C has its global headquarters in Chicago, USA, but is helping to shape the future of reliable electricity delivery throughout the world. It is an employee owned company whose mission is to continually develop new solutions for electricity delivery and foster the improved efficiency and reliability required for the intelligent grid.

LG Chem is a major supplier of lithium-ion batteries and has a significant market share in consumer, automotive, and stationary applications. It is heavily involved with the development of the Chevrolet Bolt electric car due in showrooms later this year.

Not only will it supply the battery for the car but the battery control system and many of the interior components as well. As of this moment, in the rapidly changing world of batteries, it is the largest battery manufacturer in the world.
