Unnayan Learning Hub: A Platform To Transform Girls

Last updated on by

Innumerable hurdles exist for students enrolled in government-run schools looking for a meaningful education in New Delhi. In these schools, there is an acute dearth of teachers and, unfortunately, even those few who have the privilege of having a teacher present are not taught properly. In most of these communities, the prevalent gender discrimination results in neglect of girls’ education. Coming from illiterate and uneducated families, these girls do not have any platform of support to aid them in gaining knowledge and developing life skills, nor do they have access to resources. As a result, these promising girls are denied opportunities to receive wholesome education, severely denting their chances to improve their lives. Unnayan Learning Hub aspires to give these girls a meaningful, wholesome and well-rounded education to tap their inner potential and use it to effect change in their communities.

india-girlsUnnayan aims to support promising girls in low-income communities to extract the maximum out of their school education and become an educational community hub for girls in the community by supporting them in their education through after-school learning centres.

It is an after-school learning hub focused on educating girls to aid their academic education. The learning hub supports these girls with a platform which can help them to extract the most out of their school education, acting as a supplement. With a strong focus on teaching social science and science to primary-level girls (majorly, government school girls due to lack of quality education), belonging to both English and vernacular medium, our hubs endeavor to use activity and project-based learning as teaching tools to support their growth into responsible community leaders implementing community empowerment projects. English language skills are imparted to high school girls using a phonics program after which the girls are involved with and trained to teach in our centers as we expand. Teachers are recruited from the community and trained through various partner organizations and support structures before they start teaching. These teachers help transform the community’s mindset about girls’ education, and also, financially support their own families.

indian-girlUnnayan has been quite active in engaging the community, organizing a girls’ education campaign and a first-of-its-kind self-defence camp for the women and girls of the community which received tremendous response. It now caters to around 90+ students. Unnayan has been featured in YourStory.in, in Deccan Herald, and has been recognized as an educational innovation by Centre for Educational Innovation, Results for Development Institute.

This first post, which is a part of a series of posts, aims to give you an introduction to the work being done by Unnayan, the belief behind it and what the future looks like. In subsequent posts, we will detail the strategies and techniques that have been used by us in teaching, what worked for us, what didn’t, and the learnings that we have taken away from each of our experiences. We hope that these posts give our readers an insight into the working of an educational start-up.
